It was a cold start to the year but the rest of the season has seen some prolonged dry and warm periods making a good year for sailing. During the season we have had a large number of visitors from the continent as well as visiting clubs and individual sailors resulting in another busy and successful year at the marina. This newsletter is to bring you up to date with what has been happening throughout this year and to let you know of plans for the coming season.

We are a debt free marina and this has enabled us to keep next years rate rise well below current inflation levels and to continue with our refurbishment programme .

2012 Mooring Fees

We are very much aware of the current economic climate and as such have limited our mooring fee increase from £240 to £246 ex VAT (£295 inc VAT) for the under 11 meters and from £284 to £290 ex VAT (£349 inc VAT) for 11 meters and over.

Incentive Schemes

Please find listed below a package of incentive schemes that we trust will be to your benefit.

We have started a refer a friend scheme- If you as a resident refer a new boat to the marina (hasn’t been an existing berth holder for the last twelve months) and they sign up and pay for a years annual mooring we will credit your account with £400.00.

If you sell your vessel and persuade the new purchaser to become a new resident the same deal will apply.

We also have a surplus of 11 meter berths and as a special for the coming year we will be offering two and three year contracts at a discount of 7.5% for two years and 10.5 % for three years on our published rates. This offer is open to boats occupying 11 meter berths only and a refund policy is available after the first full year.

Terms & Conditions

11 Metre Offer – Terms and Conditions

If a resident occupying an 11 metre Berth pays upfront for the period 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2014 they will be entitled to a 7.5% discount on the published price. This would equate to a payment of £7,102.15 (a saving of £575.85 on the published price assuming no inflation rise in 2013).

If a resident occupying an 11 metre Berth pays upfront for the period 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2015 they will be entitled to a 10.5% discount on the published price. This would equate to a payment of £10,307.71 (a saving of £1,209.28 on the published price assuming no inflation rise in both 2013 and 2014).

Refunds will only be made after one full year has elapsed and will be calculated on the basis of the applicable short term published rates without any discount.

This offer cannot be taken up in conjunction with any other offer

This offer is subject to berth availability and Burnham Yacht Harbour Marina Ltd. management’s absolute discretion (and for the avoidance of doubt, Burnham Yacht Harbour may at its sole discretion decline an application without explanation)

This offer only applies to boats used for private and pleasure purposes; and excludes commercial vessels – including those used for fishing, hire, charter, tuition or diving.

Offer cannot be made retrospectively.

The berth holder cannot transfer their rights to anyone.

Burnham Yacht Harbour Marina Ltd. standard terms and conditions will apply.

The published annual mooring rate for an eleven metre berth for the period 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2013 is £3,839.00

Marinestore are also offering all our berth holders a 5% discount on all purchases throughout their stores- see Marinestore web site for further details and Terms & Conditions

IMPROVEMENTS

Electricity power pedestals

We have replaced all of the electrical power pedestals on the pontoons and trust these will prove as reliable as the originals. Metered electricity cables are available from the marina office. The refundable cable deposit is £120.00 and electricity units are charged quarterly.

Top Car Park and Clarke and Carter Sales Area

Both areas have been completely resurfaced and tidied up.

Recycling

This year we agreed to have a clothes recycling bank supplied by the British Heart Foundation. We are pleased to hear that they they are very happy with the quantity and quality of clothes donated to date .

Dredging

This years dredging programme is expected to start in late December. We are planning to dredge rows A,D,E and H. as in previous years it would be most helpful if boat owners could liaise with the Harbourmaster with regard relocation of their vessel when fingers are removed.

Technology

Wi-Fi- Attempts to improve the wi-fi signal are constantly being motioned in an effort to improve the facility. It is worth noting that a few customers have noticed that by using USB powered receiver transmitter aerial(approx £20.00) the quality of reception is greatly improved.

Staff

This year has seen the departure of Jay Lumiere (Harbourmaster), Peter Jowers (Shipwright) and David Bridge (Engineer). We wish them all the best for the future.

We welcome Bruce Mapes to our staff. Bruce has taken over the role of Harbourmaster.

New Buoyage System

In preparation for the new shipping trade to the Wallasea Wild Coast Project, the Crouch Harbour Authority, with support and assistance from Crossrail, have carried out major improvements to the buoyage of the River Crouch approach from Whitaker Spit inwards to Burnham Fairway . I am sure you will agree that it makes the Marina even more accessible.

Bluebird of Chelsea

We are very pleased that Dunkirk little ship “Bluebird of Chelsea”, has returned to BYH for restoration work. This beautiful motor yacht was built by Thornycroft and originally owned by Sir Malcolm Campbell.

Tucker Brown Cup

The annual Tucker Brown Cup took place this year at the end of September and once again we were lucky to have fine weather and enjoyable racing. Excellent food was provided by The Swallowtail and superb entertainment from the MJK band. Please note next years event will be held on 29th September 2012.

Health and Safety

When you are working on a boat based ashotre please ensure that all rubbish and old antifouling is removed at the end of each day. Please use plastic sheeting to protect the ground (gravel or block paving) and ensure that any ladders are correctly attached to the boat and safe to use. We would strongly recommend the use of the correct masks when antifouling.

Our terms and conditions do not allow subcontractors on site but in exceptional cases they will need to have received our prior written consent/approval and hold the appropriate insurance certificates and risk assessments . A site access charge will apply to contractors working on the marina site

The Swallowtail

The new owners (Lisa and Martin Pugh) took over The Swallowtail in May this year and have had a busy six months making improvements. The premises have been refurbished throughout and you are invited to come along and see the changes whilst enjoying the “best views in Burnham!” . You will find their events calender and new winter menus on their website. All types of private events can be catered for in the delightful function suite- special occasions being the speciality! . They pride themselves on being able to tailor-make a package to suit your own requirments. Open to the public 7 days a week, they look forweard to welcoming new and existing customers.

Clarke & Carter Interyacht Ltd , (the on site brokers), have had another successful year. Both brokerage and new boat sales up on last year, helped in Europe by the stronger Euro. The company has invested in a new centralised computer system to improve the way customers are handled through their offices in Kent, Essex and Suffolk, by more closely matching their requirements as soon as boats come on to the nmarket.

www.clarkeandcarter.co.uk 01621 785600

Last year was a huge success and we hope that all our customers, both new and long- standing will join us for the day.

Traditionally the event falls on the same day as the town carnival and so the last Saturday in September is possibly one of the highlights of the year in Burnham.

Based on Hydrographic Surveying undertaken by Port of London Authority in 2010 at Crossrail’s expense, the number of navigation buoys in these parts of the river will be increased from 16 (three not lit) to 30 (all lit). In order to achieve this some 26 new navigation buoys are being purchased, with four existing buoys being re-used/position changed.

The new buoys will be larger and have greater focal height to make them more visible, and the distances between buoys will be reduced. Six pairs of lateral (Port and Starboard) buoys marking the main Whitaker and Outer Crouch channels will have synchronised lanterns which will flash together. For the first time the north side of the drying Swallowtail Bank will be marked by buoys. Buoyage in the area of the Crouch Buoy is being revised to better guide inward bound vessels and the channel immediately seaward of ‘Shore Ends’ will be better marked to prevent boats wandering onto the fairly steep edged Foulness sand. To avoid confusion the Pinto wreck buoy will be replaced by a Port Hand buoy, and another Port hand buoy will be installed in the lower reach of R. Roach. Branklet Buoy will be replaced with the appropriate red and green ‘Channels join, Preferred Channel to Starboard’ mark.

It is hoped that the improved marking of the Channels will encourage yachtsmen to visit the Crouch and lead to improved safety of navigation. Certainly The Whitaker and Swallowtail will no longer be the ‘Black Hole’ they have been for many years.
